SheepArcade editor's review: Liong (Chinese word for Dragon) is a re-make of the classic Mahjong game, where the objective is to clear all the tiles off the game board by matching pairs of tiles and removing them. However, Liong adds a twist to the game by offering two game modes (in Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty), both of which involve the extra element of time, and extra bonus tiles that adds to the excitement and intensity. The first game mode is the Puzzle mode, where the player attempts to clear the tiles from the board by matching them to the Liong, before it reaches the gate of the palace and escapes with the emperor’s fortunes and good luck. The Puzzle mode is the easier of the two game modes, because it simply requires matching the tiles displayed on the Liong to any of the tiles on the game board. Matching the tiles causes the Liong to retreat further back, thus buying the player more time to continue pairing the remaining tiles. In the second game mode Mahjong follows the standard rules of the classic mahjong arcade game, but once again the tiles need to be completely removed before the Liong reaches the palace gates. Both game modes also offer bonus rounds, where a bingo-like game is played to earn extra points and awards. Awards are offered for completing the levels within certain requirements (such as making a certain number of matches in a specified amount of time), but doesn’t add too much to the overall game play. Liong offers a nice visual adaptation to the traditional Mahjong arcade game, but falls slightly short in by the lack of innovation in the game design and game play. The time element creates a different dynamic for the player, but otherwise the game play offers little to the players, especially since it is dragged over slightly too many levels and stages. However, Liong has a nice overall theme and feel about it, the visuals are attractive, the colours vibrant, and the puzzle fast and exciting. For players new to the mahjong arcade game, this is certainly a nice introduction to an old classic. |
