Mortimer Beckett and The Secrets of Spooky Manor is a search-and-find genre of casual games with quite a few twists and surprises. It manages to splice a search-and-find game with elements of puzzle and problem solving together to produce something that is much more enjoyable and interesting than either elements alone.

The twist to the search-and-find element of Mortimer Beckett is simple: instead of finding the exact object, you are given the picture of the object, but scattered around the screen are actually pieces or fragments of the object. This makes searching for the objects much more interesting, because you have to view the object in a completely different perspective in order to find them. There are two different types of objects that have to be located: Missing objects have to be returned to the right place on the screen once found, and Puzzle objects must be used to activate or solve a puzzle once you have located them.

The game play of Mortimer Beckett is well-very crafted, because unlike most seek-and-find games, it does not follow a linear flow. There are many rooms in which you will not be able to complete unless you have located other clues and missing items from other rooms, and you can also return to different rooms if you are stuck at any point. This keeps the game player much more interesting, and the storyline moving along nicely. Hints are always available if you find yourself completely stumped as to where the missing pieces are to be found, to keep players from being completed frustrated with the game. There are over 30 spooky and eerie rooms for you to explore, but hold your nerve, because there is definitely something unusual about the manor.

From the starting screen, where you can see the eyeballs on the character follow the pointer of the mouse, right down to the very aptly chosen sound effects and music, Mortimer Beckett and The Secrets of Spooky Manor is a wonderfully creative and carefully refined game, and the attention to detail is enormously satisfying for players of the search-and-find genre. But be warned, this game is frighteningly addictive!
